under tank heater

After reading a few posts and seeing a lot of negative comments about heat lamps, I think I am gonna splurge and get an under tank heater. Right now I have a 20 gal, but I will eventually be moving him into a 30 long when he gets bigger...what size do you suggest for each? I also have a corn that has an under tank heater, but I don't use it because i have no way of regulating the temperature and i am not sure how hot it will get...I got the tank second hand.

I am having a HELL of a time keeping the darned humidity level up..I am thinking about just building a viv with melamine. My friend made one and she doesn't seem to have as much trouble.

Any suggestions or comments are welcome..thanks

I'd use a medium on either. Though I've got two 30 gallons with small UTH and a heat lamp. If you're worried about being able to regulate temps, then get a thermostat and set it where you want it. I don't have a problem with heat lamps but you do need a UTH as well so they get that belly heat.

I have tanks we made melanin, they're easy, cheap and hold the humidity great. I have a BP that's been a problem shedder but she's been fine since I put her in one of those. Here's a link on a good 'how to' on making one...

they have a control thing at petco and petsmart, where you can plug in the UTH/whatever plugs and set it to how hot you want it, once it gets too hot it'll shut off the heaters

I recommend getting the Zoo Med 500R Thermostat for using it with a heating pad. theyre relatively inexpensive, and excellent little Tstats to use with any under tank heating pad you might be using :)

Those melamine cages that [info]thunder_nari are AWESOME! *saves pictures and text* i might have to give those things a try
